Volunteers mobilised to serve the community
Every week our amazing team provides a free dinner and dessert to over 400 hungry people in Palmerston North, Levin and Whanganui. Our community meal is much more than a free feed. It helps bring the community together, fostering a sense of whanaungatanga and manaakitanga. It is also a way for people to get involved in giving back to their community.
We run a number of different fitness options across our different community centres. We run Box Fit in Palmerston North, Restore in Levin and Win the Morning in Whanganui. These fitness programmes are designed to help people become holistically healthy and to connect with others who are on the same journey as they are.
Our Prison Care ministry exists to support individuals and their whānau both during and after their time in prison. We regularly visit people inside, offering encouragement, practical help, and spiritual care to those looking for a fresh start. Beyond the prison walls, we provide ongoing support to help men successfully reintegrate into the community, including a supervised house for those in need of a safe and stable place to live. Through connection, care, and practical assistance, we walk alongside people on their journey toward healing and restoration.
Our chaplains are dedicated to bringing hope and support to our residents, offering both practical care and spiritual encouragement. Each week, they visit our Whānau Flats to provide a free meal, creating a warm and welcoming space where residents can connect and feel valued. Beyond the meal, they offer a listening ear, prayer, and encouragement, walking alongside those who may be facing challenges. Through their presence and care, our chaplains help foster a sense of community and remind our residents that they are not alone.
Marlane Duff began giving soup out to children in the Highbury community at the start of 2016. In a few weeks she was feeding between 30 and 70 hungry children every week. She let us know what she was doing and we got behind this initiative as a community and helped build a team of people around her. Every Wednesday after school in Palmerston North we open our doors to children in the community to come in and have a free meal.
