I grew up with abuse from an alcoholic father and found refuge in drugs and crime. Gang life became my identity, but it came at a cost. Everything changed for me when I connected to Legacy. They helped me find peace and purpose.
My life spiralled out of control after losing my nan. I ended up in and out of foster homes and then in prison for most of my life. Then one day I connected with Legacy. They helped me find healing and became my new family.
Whānau Flats are shared accommodation with other flatmates. Each flat is fully furnished, with a room made up and weekly cleaning of common areas. Payment covers your room, cleaning, internet, utilities, rubbish, lawns and basics such as toilet paper and dishwashing liquid. Each flat has a kaitiaki or head tenant, a flatmate that helps the Legacy team develop a supportive and safe whānau culture. Volunteer chaplains visit each flat to provide a free shared meal to help with personal costs and further build a sense of whānau in each home. Van pick-ups are available to access a free weekly meal at the local Legacy Community Centre, attend men’s and women’s support groups, or to attend a church service on Sundays. This is all aimed at creating a supportive living environment for those who want to access these services.
